One of our favorite Hanukkah traditions is singing Hanukkah songs after lighting the candles on our beautiful Hanukkiyah. No Chanukkah is complete without a stunning Menorah filling the room with light, delicious Latkes, made by Bubbe, or sweet Sufganiyot, a pair of dreidels for the annual family spin the dreidel competition! Now imagine the family fills the room with cheerful chanting as you recount the Hanukkah blessings and stories.

Ma’oz Tzur

Written in the 13th century, Ma’oz Tzur is a Piyyut no Hanukah is complete without its words echoing in the house of every family.  The name means ‘Stronghold of Rock’, which is a name for God. The Piyyut celebrates the victories of the Israelites and Jewish people throughout the centuries and how they overcame their enemies, from Pharaoh to Antiochus. The empowering theme of this song makes it most suitable for Hanukkah, a holiday that celebrates once again the courage and strength of our nation, sending a terrific message to our children!

Cheerful and fun, this great Chanukah song, also known as ‘I have a little dreidel’, was written by the talented Levin Kipnis. The ‘King of the Children’ wrote the lyrics to this loved song, celebrating the great miracle of the holiday and the joy of the nation. This song will definitely become a favorite with your children if it hasn’t become already!

Another great song by Kipnis! This song ‘I have a candle’ focuses on the light of a single thin candle. Sometimes we might rely on our visual perception and underestimate object and people before us, but as this song teaches, not everything is as our eyes perceive and we should always have faith. This faith will illuminate the things and world before us, show us they are great and inspire us as the simple candle does.
